The NRA Basic Muzzleloader Course introduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a Muzzleloader safely. Through this course, the students will learn about Muzzleloader parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, Muzzleloader shooting fundamentals, and Muzzleloader shooting activities. The Basic Muzzleloader Course will also help prepare the student for participation in other NRA courses. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive a certification in NRA Basic Muzzleloader.
COURSE OUTLINE
NRA Basic Muzzleloading Shooting Course is broken down into five lessons.
Course Goal: To teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe and proper use of a Muzzleloader.
Length of Course: 10 hours
Course Lessons:
Lesson I: Muzzleloading Knowledge and Safe Handling
Lesson II: Loading and ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Muzzleloader Shooting
Lesson III: Loading and Firing the First Shots
Lesson IV: Muzzleloader and the Shooting Skills Practical Exercise
Lesson V: Continued Opportunities for Muzzleloader Skill DevelopmentItems needed:
- Eye and hearing protection
- Muzzleloader(s)
- Appropriate powder and projectiles (ask instructor if you are unsure what you need)
- Appropriate range attire. No open toed shoes, no low-cut clothing.
- Water bottle
- Pencil and note pad

Every guest 18 years of age and older must read and sign the online Waiver before they are allowed onto the NRA Whittington Center. For those younger than 18 years of age a parent or legal guardian must complete the form and sign it on their behalf. Waivers must be filled out once a year every year on or after January 1st.

Course is typically scheduled as a 1 day event.
The course length of the NRA Basic Muzzleloading Course is based on the estimated
length of each lesson indicated in the lesson plans. The actual course length may vary, as the time required for each lesson will vary based on class size, student experience and comprehension level, student-to instructor ratio, weather, and unforeseen circumstances.
This course has been designed to allow for maximum flexibility in scheduling. It may
be conducted a few hours at a time over several days or it may be conducted as a one-day
course.

This course builds on the foundation and fundamentals learned in the Precision Long Range I Course. Students will learn techniques for Angle Fire and Alternate Firing positions.
This course builds on the foundation and fundamentals taught in Precision Long Range I-II. Students are encouraged to apply everything they have previously learned and put it to use.
This is a Masters level course that focuses on potential engagements that can occur during periods of darkness.
