The NRA Basic Rifle Course introduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a Rifle safely. Through this course, the students will learn about Rifle parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, Rifle
shooting fundamentals, and Rifle shooting activities. The Basic Rifle Course will also help prepare the student for participation in other NRA courses. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive a certification in NRA Basic Rifle.
The NRA Basic Rifle Course is broken down into five lessons. Course length will vary. Students will be given a break for lunch.
- Lesson I: Rifle Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling
- Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Rifle Shooting
- Lesson III: Firing the First Shots
- Lesson IV: Scoring Targets, and Selecting and Maintaining Your Rifle
- Lesson V: Course Review and Examination
Items needed:
- Eye and hearing protection
- Firearms (bolt-action, semi-automatic, lever-action and slide-action rifles). Firearms are also available for students to rent during the course.
- 50 rounds of factory ammunition. No reloads allowed.
- Appropriate range attire. No open toed shoes, no low-cut clothing.
- Water bottle
- Pencil and note pad

Every guest 18 years of age and older must read and sign the online Waiver before they are allowed onto the NRA Whittington Center. For those younger than 18 years of age a parent or legal guardian must complete the form and sign it on their behalf. Waivers must be filled out once a year every year on or after January 1st.

Course is typically scheduled as a 1 day event.
The course length of the NRA Basic Rifle Course is based on the estimated
length of each lesson indicated in the lesson plans. The actual course length may vary, as the time required for each lesson will vary based on class size, student experience and comprehension level, student-to instructor ratio, weather, and unforeseen circumstances.
This course has been designed to allow for maximum flexibility in scheduling. It may
be conducted a few hours at a time over several days or it may be conducted as a one-day
course.
