The NRA Whittington Center’s Precision Rifle – School of 1000 yards Course introduces students to the fundamentals, equipment, and techniques required for success in precision rifle shooting. Topics will include optics selection use and adjustments, internal and external ballistics, fundamentals of marksmanship, environmental effects on ballistic, rifle cleaning and maintenance and more. This course is designed with the sporting rifle enthusiast, competition shooter, and hunter in mind.
Practical range training will include shooting targets at known distances, range estimation, various challenging courses of fire, ballistics calculation and application, effects of the wind and how to correct for it, maximum point blank range, meteorological effects on bullet trajectory, and firearms safety.
Our goal is to help each student exceed their comfortable engagement distance through the application of science and physics. As well as understanding the capabilities and limitations of their equipment and ammunition. Students will engage targets from 100 to 1000 yards, and beyond.
Day 1
In the Classroom we will cover Internal and External Ballistic, Marksmanship, Optics and more. On the range we will get a 100 yard zero and data, then do some shooting exercises.
Day 2
On the Cooper Range, Students will learn to gather velocity, environmental and other data. Applying and verifying the data we gather; Students will engage targets from 200 to 1000 yards, and beyond. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of wind, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, altitude, and other factors on ballistics. The class will work in teams to learn shooter spotter relationships. We will apply data gathering and record keeping establishing DOPE (Data on Previous Engagements).
Day 3
We will pick up where we left off at the Cooper Range with more shooting exercises such as multiple target transitions and timed engagements on multiple targets (match simulation). We will then return to the classroom for rifle cleaning and maintenance, followed by a final lecture and discussion.
